Background of the Study
Nursing education plays a vital role in preparing competent healthcare professionals capable of addressing evolving patient care needs. Traditionally, nursing education relied heavily on lecture-based instruction; however, advancements in educational methodologies have introduced innovative teaching strategies aimed at improving student engagement, knowledge retention, and clinical decision-making (Adeyemi & Yusuf, 2024). The adoption of student-centered teaching methods such as simulation-based learning, case-based instruction, problem-based learning (PBL), and the integration of digital technologies has been shown to enhance nursing students' critical thinking and practical skills (Williams & Garba, 2023).
In Plateau State, nursing educators face several challenges that may hinder the adoption of innovative teaching strategies. These challenges include limited access to modern teaching resources, inadequate faculty training on contemporary teaching methodologies, and a high student-to-teacher ratio (Hassan & Sanni, 2024). Despite the recognized benefits of innovative teaching strategies, there is little research on the extent to which nursing educators in Plateau State utilize such methods and their impact on students' learning outcomes.
This study aims to assess the use of innovative teaching strategies among nursing educators in Plateau State, identify the barriers to their implementation, and explore their impact on nursing education quality.
Statement of the Problem
The effectiveness of nursing education largely depends on the instructional methods employed by educators. While innovative teaching strategies have been proven to enhance nursing students' competencies, their adoption in many Nigerian states, including Plateau, remains inconsistent (Okafor & Musa, 2024). Factors such as resistance to change, lack of institutional support, and inadequate infrastructure may hinder the integration of modern teaching approaches in nursing schools.
If nursing educators in Plateau State do not effectively incorporate innovative teaching strategies, students may graduate without adequate clinical reasoning and hands-on skills, leading to suboptimal patient care outcomes. This study seeks to examine the extent of innovative teaching strategy adoption, the challenges educators face, and its influence on nursing education quality in Plateau State.
Objectives of the Study
- To assess the extent to which nursing educators in Plateau State utilize innovative teaching strategies.
- To identify the barriers to the implementation of innovative teaching methods in nursing education.
- To evaluate the impact of innovative teaching strategies on nursing students' academic and clinical performance.

Research Hypotheses
H₀: Nursing educators in Plateau State do not significantly utilize innovative teaching strategies.
H₁: Nursing educators in Plateau State significantly utilize innovative teaching strategies.
H₀: There are no significant barriers to the implementation of innovative teaching strategies.
H₁: There are significant barriers to the implementation of innovative teaching strategies.
H₀: Innovative teaching strategies have no significant impact on nursing students' academic and clinical performance.
H₁: Innovative teaching strategies have a significant impact on nursing students' academic and clinical performance.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on nursing educators in nursing schools and colleges across Plateau State, assessing their use of innovative teaching methods, barriers to adoption, and the impact on student performance. Limitations may include variations in institutional policies, differences in access to resources, and educators’ willingness to participate in the study.
